Kendall Gardner (BSM ’20) and Matthew Johnson (BSM ’20) were named spring 2019 recipients of the Freeman Travel Abroad Award (FTAA), a new scholarship awarded by the Freeman School’s Office of Study Abroad & Exchange that offers financial assistance to students participating in Freeman study abroad programs.
The program awards scholarships of up to $1,000 per semester based on the applicant’s financial need, academic record, program choice and location, and personal statement.
“Study abroad is one of the most valuable learning experiences Tulane can offer, but not all students can afford the financial commitment,” said Mariette Thomas, associate director of Study Abroad & International Programs. “The Freeman Travel Abroad Award is a step toward helping to make the benefits of international study available to students regardless of financial constraint.”
Gardner, a junior double majoring in legal studies in business and political science, spent the fall 2018 semester in Amman, Jordan, and the spring 2019 semester in Cergy, France, where she attended ESSEC Business School. Gardner is also a scholar in Tulane’s Altman Program in International Studies & Business, a four-year undergraduate program that integrates liberal arts and business with extensive language instruction and study abroad experiences.
“International study has been the center of my Tulane education as a member
of the Altman Program in International Studies and Business,” said Gardner. “Learning from an international perspective is so important for understanding the world and our place in it. I hope to work in foreign policy after graduation, so the opportunity to live and learn abroad has been invaluable.”
Johnson, a junior majoring in finance, spent the spring 2019 semester at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. In addition to having a strong interest in Chinese history and culture, Johnson has studied Mandarin for the past six years and hopes to pursue a career in international business with an emphasis on Asian markets.
